Winterize Your Horse

Winterize Your Horse

Winter will soon be upon us, so now is a good time to "winterize" our equine friends. Foremost, be sure to worm your horse with a wormer that is designed to kill botts. Check to see if your vaccines are up to date. Make sure hooves are trimmed as frozen ground can cause breakage. Check their coats for sore or cuts under all that winter hair and if there are any signs of rain rot or greased heals be sure to treat it before it becomes worse.

If you have geldings now is a good time to check their sheaths to make sure there is no irritating build up inside. Now is an excellent time to start preparing your horse's tail for next year's show season! Wash it with shampoo, rinse well, detangle and apply a rinse of 1/3 water, 1/3 white vinegar, 1/3 liniment. Braid the tail and put it in a tail bag. You can also use an old athletic sock. Be sure to take the tail out once in a while and give it a brushing and re-apply the conditioner. If you cut strips in the top of the sock you can tie them into the top of the braid.
